April 2010 was
International IBS Awareness
Month and the BBC recently
carried even more information on
the effectiveness of
hypnotherapy for IBS.
Hypnosis has a very real
effect that can be picked up on
brain scans according to another
recent report as covered by
the BBC
A further recent report
covered by the BBC about
hypnosis (June 2011) and how it
should be available on the NHS
is
here
And on Tuesday 12th
April 2011 the Daily Mail
reported the
following
Please note that the ASA
(Advertising Standards
Authority) have jurisdiction
over the content of websites in
the UK. Ethically and legally
all content must be backed by
suitable evidence of efficacy
through research trials.
Functional Disorders such as IBS
are not diseases they are a mis-communication
between the brain and the gut
and can be effectively managed
through Hypnosis. They cannot be
'cured' as there is nothing
physical to 'cure'.
Also please note that no claim is
being made that hypnotherapy can
cure any disease, with chronic
conditions the use of hypnosis
can help a sufferer cope better
with the day-to-day issues and
frustrations. There does however
appear to be increasing evidence
from psychological and medical
research that the mind-body link
is more important to our general
wellbeing than previously
thought.
Using
inclusive and cognitive
hypnotherapy (i.e. ethical, clinical research driven and empowering, gentle, active learning,
experienced by the client within a state of deep
hypnosis)
which can
have life-long benefits typically for:-
I would
like to welcome you to my
hypnotherapy
website, which I hope you will find informative and useful, whether you
decide to choose me to help you with any problems you might have, or
another GHR/NRH (National Regulatory Register for Hypnotherapy) registered or BST qualified
hypnotherapist. These registered therapists have undertaken a high,
required, minimum number of hours of actual practical, classroom led,
training as well as significant additional private study.
Solent-hypnotherapy,
Hampshire, and
www.hampshirehypnotherapyhypnotherapist.co.uk is the website
of Duncan Murray DCHyp, MSBST, GQHP who is fully qualified in
hypnotherapy. As a skilled hypnotherapist who has ethically studied
clinical hypnosis in London with the BST foundation he is trained as a
hypnotherapist to treat performance anxiety or anxieties for weddings or
speeches as well as
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder a wide range of
debilitating phobias as well as symptoms that give rise to sleep
disorder such as insomnia. The Manchester model by Peter Whorwell
for the treatment of
IBS
has been seen on BBC in the programme
Alternative Therapies. Duncan Murray is a fully qualified
hypnotherapist having gained his diploma a DCHyp. His other website
www.Stopping-smoking.co.uk
is specifically set up to help those that are
looking for Smoking Cessation Therapy this is a particular intervention
that is for those that are wanting to be quitting smoking using a
hypnotherapist that is to say giving up an old habit that is causing
them distress through cigarettes it has been found that the use of
hypnotherapy by the application of techniques found in hypnosis are most
helpful for smokers who want to become ex-smokers that is to say be
happy ex-smokers after they have had help stopping smoking and become a
permanent quitter. Duncan is a professional hypnotherapist
working in
Hampshire and Surrey though most of the
time is spent working in Hampshire reaching out
as a hypnotherapist to people in Southampton as well as the neighbouring
city of Portsmouth along with Winchester and the towns and villages of
Eastleigh, the housing development of Whiteley along with that of Locks Heath,
the small village of Burridge,
which is close to Park Gate, and
going southwards this links to
the costal village of Warsash,
which is just across the river
from Hamble, and inland to the
market town of Bishops Waltham
which is a few miles north from
the village of Wickham, and has
the A32 passing by it that leads
to Fareham which also has the
outlying villages of Stubbington
, Titchfield and Funtley,.
Closer to home Duncan lives in
the hamlet of
Curbridge which is slightly south of the other local hamlet of Curdridge
which is served by the village,
1 mile away of , Botley and the
small town of Hedge End.
Duncan specialises in treating
anxiety based disorders from
PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder) through to a range of
responses of learned behaviours
that are known as process
phobias which include a variety
of things such as a fear of
dentists or perhaps a specific
phobia of flying or even
nervousness at driving long
distances or going to unknown
locations. Hypnotherapy is a, so
to speak, cousin of
Hypnotherapists and the use of
Accelerated Information
Processing which some refer to
by the acronym of EMDR. This
involves tapping on the wrists
or auditory stimulus that is
bilateral in its application and
experience causing the left and
right hand sides of the brain to
reprocess earlier stimuli with a
new understanding. Hypnotherapy
is all about perception and far
less to do with suggestion than
many people might be aware in
Hampshire. As a GHR registered
hypnotherapist Duncan explains
in detail to all his clients as
to how and why hypnotherapy
works that it is not some
strange matter of magic but
rather helping the brain develop
newer, better ways of thinking
about our difficulties. Whether
you are someone living in
Southampton or the other, more
naval orientated maritime port
of Portsmouth looking to achieve
a change in your perceptions of
your problems through
hypnotherapy Duncan provides an
individually tailored approach
to helping you solve your
problems. Hampshire has many
Hypnotherapists spread across
the county from many different
training backgrounds and like
any talking therapy you should
find a therapist that is
suitable for you that is health
orientated rather than
financially motivated. Many
Hypnotherapists are more
concerned about how man sessions
they sign you up for rather than
the efficacy of their treatment
this is unfortunately as true in
Hampshire as any other county. PTSD
is a very quickly learned
response to a perceived
life-threatening trauma,
although it can take several
weeks or months to fully
develop. The mind
only has to consider the event
to have been very serious or
life threatening for PTSD to be
a likely outcome, the trauma can
be a single one or a build up of
several different events, depending on the individual, how conditioned they are
to potential situations and what circumstances they found themselves in. PTSD is
in no way a reflection on an individual's courage or strength - simply put it is
the mind being unable to cope in that fraction of a second.
Typically an individual with PTSD will relive the experience when
exposed to certain triggers, will have vivid dreams about the incident, develop
depression and be unable to cope with many day-to-day activities, often
suffering from panic attacks etc. PTSD can have lifelong effects. Happily it
also can have its symptoms significantly reduced/lifted in a surprisingly short
period of therapeutic sessions.
I was trained to use
both the EMDR (Eye Movement
Desensitisation and Reframing)
as well as the 'Rewind Technique'. In the
latter of these techniques the client is taken to
a safe place in their mind, a safe comfortable place and re-experiences, from a
safe dissociated perspective, what happened :- forwards from being safe beforehand -
to being again safe afterwards, all experienced as a film being
watched/experienced in black and white; and then backwards in colour (with the
watcher actually in the film) to the beginning and repeated several times until
there is no emotional response to the originating event. This process might sound slightly strange, but it allows the mind to
reprocess everything that happened from a safe distance, dissociated from any
perceived danger or pain, as if it had happened to another person, as if they
weren't personally involved. It's very effective as a treatment with sufferers from PTSD for 16 years
having shown extremely significant gains in just one session with most immediate
symptoms reducing.
Many therapists like to utilise techniques that regress the
individual to the actual incident(s) and make them relive them again - as if
they were there. This I personally consider to be unhelpful for somebody with
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. If the mind could not cope with it the first
time I cannot see how reliving it will help, even if a client could relax enough
to enter hypnosis knowing what was about to happen to them 'again'.
Stopping smoking
therapy is
about changing your habits and beliefs as well as utilising hypnotherapyand I cannot make you do anything you don't want to;
however have you ever wondered why it was so difficult to stop even when
using NRT - that 'addictive drug' that makes you 'need to smoke' - even
though a single piece of gum (4mg) contains more than 10 times the
amount of inhaled nicotine from a single cigarette? Have you ever
wondered why NRT products say 'Willpower Required' at 10 times the dose
of Nicotine from a cigarette?
Smoking is purely a habit, and
a very successful one too, of
the Subconscious Mind reminding
you, sometimes uncomfortably so,
to smoke a fag - because it is
something you do. When you make
a conscious decision to stop
smoking your Subconscious
doesn't know this, or why you
have made the change and carries on
behaving like a smoker - well,
reminding you to smoke because
that is what you do as far as it
is concerned!As
part of the process the habit is
also looked at very closely -
and your belief system over
Nicotine being an 'addictive
drug'.
Please see my separate
website
http://www.stopping-smoking.co.uk for
further details.
Most people successfully achieve
stopping in a
single session and others
find it better to achieve the
same new learning over 3 shorter
sessions, it all
depends on your belief system
and what is going on in your
life - as a usual guideline 70%
respond fully to the single long
session programme, with others requiring a
more gentle approach to unlearn
old beliefs and accept the new
truths - all clients are given
handouts and a recording to
listen to which will help them
embed the new learning in to
their Subconscious Mind.
My
programme is specifically aimed at the long-term, chronic,
smoker living
in rural Hampshire or the cities of
Portsmouth and
Southampton. Based in
Curbridge and highly convenient for the M27,
Botley,
Whiteley and the
local villages who either wants to stop smoking or significantly reduce
their habit.
If your Subconscious Mind thinks you are still a smoker and reminds you to smoke how can
you behave like an ex-smoker and not smoke?
If an
individual wants to achieve their outcomes in a single session this would take 3 hours and cost £150.00; however to ensure that all the individual's issues are
covered I
sometimes recommend a three session approach, of an hour each, at the same hourly rate as my normal consultation fee
of £50.00p.h. Groups are run every month lasting 4 hours at a
cost of £50 per person.
As someone who had
IBS for 17 years I noticed, whilst studying for my Diploma in
Clinical Hypnosis, a rapid and long-term improvement in the
behaviour
of my gut to the extent that there are only a couple of foods
that now trigger an attack – my problem for liking
hot
curries
and chillies. I therefore developed a special interest in the treatment
of
IBS
through
hypnotherapy, was
trained by Michael Mahoney of the IBS Register
as well as by the BST Foundation and have since founded
IBSHelp.
The most common theory is that
IBS is frequently a disorder
of the interaction between the
brain and the gut; a functional
disorder.It
is not a disease. Usually
3 weekly sessions with a couple
of monthly follow up sessions
can bring very significant help
for / relief from the symptoms
of
IBS. Historically an 80%
reduction in symptoms from an
individual's starting point;
measured when commencing
treatment.
IBS
is distressing and life
restricting for the estimated
10.5% in 2004 (8.2% in 2003) of
the British adult population
that are diagnosed sufferers and
almost twice as many of those
are women in comparison to men.
Allowing for unreported cases,
it is estimated to affect 15-20%
of the general population at any
one time
(Hypnotherapy
in Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
a Large-Scale Audit of a
Clinical Service With
Examination of Factors
Influencing Responsiveness – W.M
Gonsalkorale PhD, L.A. Houghton
PhD., and Peter Whorwell MD FRCP
– The American Journal of
Gastroenterology Vol 97 No 4
2002). IBS
is an anathema too as it is
usually confirmed by the absence
of any other condition.
Hypnotherapy is included in
the 2008
NICE
[National Institute for
Health and
Clinical Excellence] clinical guidelines, under
psychological interventions, as
a third option (with
the others being
diet and medication) for the
management of IBS and
particularly for individuals
that have had the syndrome for
over 12 months.
This is in part due to
the significant clinical
research of an NHS unit in
Manchester
in the use of hypnotherapy in
the management of
IBS. Professor Peter
Whorwell heads up the
South Manchester
Functional Bowel Service
at
ManchesterUniversity’s
School
of Medicine
and is the founder of what has
become known as the Manchester
Model;
the model of treatment that I use.
In the Manchester Model,
specific
gut-orientated therapy is
used in the suggestion of
warmth, calmness and relaxation
of the colon and this
can have benefits that can
provide up to five years being
symptom free(Whorwell
PJ (2006). 'Effective
Management of
Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
The Manchester Model'
(International
Journal of Clinical and
Experimental Hypnosis,
54(1):21-6.).
The model suggests the
uses of gut directed therapy
over
several weeks
using guided imagery,
particularly that of the gut as
a smoothly flowing river or, the
use of a tree metaphor for
strength and resilience, along
with teaching self-hypnosis.The Manchester Model
reports that approximately 80%
of patients showed significant
improvement in symptoms and
overall well-being; the patient
audit used a statistically
important 250 case histories(Hypnotherapy in
Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The
American Journal of
Gastroenterology Vol 97 No 4
2002).
A previous study (Galovoski
T.E., Blanchard E.B. 'The
Treatment of Irritable Bowel
Syndrome
with
Hypnotherapy' Applied
Psycophysiological Biofeedback
1998;23;219-32)
importantly
showed that hypnotic
ability (how deeply you enter
hypnosis) is not a factor in the
success of treatment.
A
s
the audit of
hypnotherapy of Whorwell (et
al) concludes “...it
has been shown that their [drugs]
beneficial effect is lost
shortly after cessation of
treatment…which is in sharp
contrast to
hypnotherapywhere the symptomatic
improvement is long-lasting.”
A final thought before
starting any treatment: as the
hypnotherapist
I (and any
hypnotherapist) must ensure
that the client has had
IBS diagnosed by a medical
practitioner, this is a must as
IBS is similar to many other
symptoms
such as Colitis, Crohn’s
disease and Coeliac disease.
